Discovering the Seven Dhatus: The Basic Tissues that Support the Human Body in Ayurveda

In Ayurveda, the concept of dhatus refers to the seven basic tissues or substances that make up the human body. These dhatus are essential for the proper functioning of the body and the maintenance of good health. The seven dhatus are:


Rasa (Plasma)

Rasa dhatu is the first stage of transformation of the food we eat. It acts as a medium for transporting nutrients and waste materials throughout the body. Rasa also helps in maintaining fluid balance and supports digestion.


Rakta (Blood)

Rakta dhatu is formed from Rasa and helps in carrying oxygen and nutrients to different parts of the body. It also helps in maintaining the body temperature and providing immunity against diseases.


Mamsa (Muscle Tissue)

Mamsa dhatu is formed from Rakta and helps in the movement of the body. It also provides strength and support to the body and protects internal organs.


Meda (Fat Tissue)

Meda dhatu is formed from Mamsa and helps in providing energy and insulation to the body. It also helps in maintaining the body shape and temperature.


Asthi (Bone Tissue)

Asthi dhatu is formed from Meda and provides structure and support to the body. It also helps in the movement of the body and protects internal organs.


Majja (Bone Marrow and Nervous Tissue)

Majja dhatu is formed from Asthi and acts as a cushion for the internal organs. It also helps in the production of blood cells and provides support to the nervous system.


Shukra (Reproductive Tissue)

Shukra dhatu is formed from Majja and is responsible for the production of semen and eggs. It also helps in maintaining fertility and overall vitality.


Each of these dhatus is connected to and supports the next in a continuous process of transformation and rejuvenation. Imbalances in one dhatu can affect the functioning of others, leading to health problems. By maintaining balance and harmony in the dhatus, an individual can maintain good health and vitality in accordance with the principles of Ayurveda.
